MacBook Air M2 from 2022
Thinner than its predecessor, with MagSafe back. The second part is good news for the charging port and less good news for what happens when it falls.
What getting thinner costs
The M2 Air got a flatter case and an even thinner board. That makes it pleasant to carry and more sensitive to the impact when it leaves a table. Where an older Air takes a dent, this board can flex, and flexing lifts solder joints.
The good news is MagSafe. It is back, which means the cable lets go instead of dragging the port with it. The USB-C ports therefore take less abuse than on the M1, though they remain the weak spot during a voltage spike.
What we see most often on this board
- After a fall part of the keyboard or trackpad stops responding
- It will not charge over MagSafe but does over USB-C, or the other way round
- It gives no sign of life after a fall or after liquid
- The screen has a line or a dead area while the glass is intact
- It starts and shuts down again
- The speakers crackle or one side has gone silent
What we look for on this model
With drop damage the first question is always whether the board has flexed. We look at the connectors along the edges under the microscope, because that is where the joints break first. A lifted connector can be repaired, a cracked board usually cannot, and we say honestly which of the two it is.
Liquid behaves here as it does on the M1: little room, so quickly everywhere, but also well within reach of an ultrasonic bath.

Soldered memory chips, key inside the M2 itself. Same rule as on the M1: repairing the board means keeping the files, replacing it means losing them.
If the machine has been dropped and will not start, do not keep switching it on. On a flexed board every attempt can break a half broken joint the rest of the way.
Questions about this model
It fell and does nothing. Is that the end?
Not necessarily. Often one connector along the edge of the board has lifted, and that can be repaired. We look at it under the microscope and say honestly whether it is worth doing.
MagSafe does not work but USB-C does. What is that?
Then it is the MagSafe port or the component behind it, not the whole power side. That is one of the lighter repairs.
Can I keep using it until I post it?
If it works and no liquid is involved, yes. If liquid was involved, better not, because corrosion keeps working as long as there is current.
